EHEES (Elephant Haven European Elephant Sanctuary), is a retirement home for elephants from European zoos and circuses, answering a legal need and private owners requests. We are a care center which offers elephants a place for life, where their natural needs are respected, where they are re-socialized and rehabilitated in a protected environment. This is the true story of Gandhi and Delhi, Asian elephants, our two first retired residents in EHEES. Only your donations make this possible!
Recently, it has become necessary to create elephant sanctuaries in Europe. Private elephant owners, circuses and zoos may need a place for their elephant(s) to live. Almost all European countries ban wild animals from circuses. Bringing them back to their country of origin is sometimes not possible. Retired elephants from zoos and circuses have now a place for life in EHEES. The sanctuary depends on donations, so the challenge is to get financial help to give elephants the daily care they need.
EHEES, a non-profit, has been founded for those elephants in a protected and adapted environment, as a sanctuary, a retirement home, a care center. EHEES is the only sanctuary in whole Europe to welcome elephants coming from European zoos and circuses. Elephant Haven stands for respect for animals, humans and nature. We need help to sustain the new life of Gandhi and Delhi, our 2 first residents, to cover for caregivers salaries, heating for the barn, food, park extension, maintenance, etc.
EHEES is expanding to offer a place for life to more elephants. EHEES needs funds to build a second barn and additional fences to welcome 6 additional elephants. Here, retired elephants will be re-socialized and rehabilitated. Informative programs about elephants and their behavior will be proposed to have a better understanding of elephants, as well as local fauna and flora. All this encourages re-connection with nature, to raise awareness and respect for the environment.
