Childline is a free confidential service just for young people. It can be contacted online and on the phone, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It's a place where young people can get the help they need in the way they want it. They talk to us about things like abuse, self-harm and suicide; problems they feel they can't speak to anyone else about. On average, a child contacts Childline every 25 seconds.
Making sure we could be here for hundreds of worried, scared and confused children each day during the pandemic was the greatest challenge we've faced in decades. Even though schools are back open and families are able to meet once more, there are still many children and young people who need the support of our Childline counsellors. They might want to talk about anything from the pressure of school work to domestic abuse or suicidal thoughts.
By funding Childline for a day you'll enable us to give around 700 counselling sessions to children who may be going through the toughest time of their young lives. It takes a lot of courage for a child to contact Childline and open up about their feelings. But every one of them will find a listening ear, see a way forward and change their life for the better. For hundreds of thousands of children and young people with nowhere else to turn, Childline is here to listen.
Our lifesaving Childline service has been running for over 35 years. During this time, we have handled an average of more than 3,000 calls a week, and delivered over 5.5 million counselling sessions. Childline provided 204,638 counselling sessions in 2020/21, and there were over 58,000 submissions to the website message boards. We aim to continue providing these services for young people for as long as they are needed.
