Childline is a free confidential service just for young people. Children can contact our Childline practitioners and volunteers online, via email and on the phone, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It's a place where young people can get the help they need in the way they want it. They talk to us about things like abuse, self-harm and suicide; problems they feel they can't speak to anyone else about. On average, a child contacts Childline every 45 seconds.
No child should suffer abuse. Struggling with devastating trauma, violence and neglect is too much for children. They are lonely and frightened, and the scars can last a lifetime. But we know that half a million children a year suffer abuse in the UK. That means 7 children in a classroom experience abuse before they turn 18. While more and more children are being put at risk by new dangers in the world around them.
By funding Childline for a day you'll enable us to give around 550 counselling sessions to children who may be going through the toughest time of their young lives. It takes a lot of courage for a child to contact Childline and open up about their feelings. But every one of them will find a listening ear, see a way forward and change their life for the better. For hundreds of thousands of children and young people with nowhere else to turn, Childline is here to listen.
Our lifesaving Childline service has been running for 40 years. Last year, our Childline counsellors carried out almost 200,000 counselling sessions with children and young people. We want to be able to listen to every child who contacts us, leaving no call, email or online chat unanswered, but to do that we need your support.
