This Project will create 18 mobile free voluntary and counselling centres across the 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo State. This will serve to provide free Counselling and Screening for HIV and Hepatitis B and C Virus among the general population, with particular attention to pregnant women and children. This will assist in prevention and control of the infection in the areas and at least 1,000 clients per local government, totaling 18,000 clients is expected to be reached.
Hepatitis B is a potentially life-threatening liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is a major global health problem. It cause chronic infection and puts people at high risk of death from cirrhosis and liver cancer. Timely screening and and effective vaccine can offer a 98-100% protection against hepatitis for at least 18,000 beneficiaries across all the Local Government Areas of ondo State.It will avert the development of complication of liver cancer among the beneficiaries.
From study conducted recently in Ondo State, 12.4% of the women had Hepatitis B virus, implying that it is endemic in the area. Free Screening and Vaccination will assist in reducing the burden of the disease in all the Local Government Areas of Ondo State, Nigeria. Through this Project,the general population will be well educated about HBV infection, targeting the less educated and those with positive contacts. Vaccination programmes would be implemented on infants, children and adults.
The Project will reach at least 18,000 clients from the general population of Ondo State, Nigeria with free Hepatitis B virus Screening and Vaccination, thus reducing the prevalence of the disease in the area.
