Free Farmers from Poverty & Educate their Children

Last November Fair Planet launched its first pilot training season in Morogoro region, Tanzania. The training is carried out in 10 farmers’ fields in 6 villages in the Mvomero district. Farmers from the different villages are trained on site by Fair Planet’s training team composed of Israeli and Tanzanian experts, in collaboration with the extension service of the local ministry of agriculture.

During the season each farmer is visited by Fair Planet’s trainers every week, and is trained on a variety of topics related to vegetable production:

• Plot selection and crop rotation
• Plot preparation - planting beds and pre-planting fertilizer application
• Preparation and transplanting seedlings
• Monitoring of soil moisture and use of irrigation intervals
• Use of compound fertilizers and fertilizers application protocols
• Scouting and identification pests and diseases
• Plant protection and safe use of toxic chemicals

Here are some trainees that Fair Planet is visiting regularly:

• In Mzumbe ward one farmer is trained - Godfrey. Fair Planet teams have visited Godfrey 18 times and trained him and his neighbors on tomato production using furrow irrigation, together with Florida, the village’s extension officer.
• In Mlali ward we have two farmers in training - Fredrick and Mariam, both are growing tomatoes under drip irrigation. Together with the village’s extension officer – Isack – we have already visited both plots 19 times.

Next week the trainees will start harvesting the fruits of the long and rewarding season.
