Breaking Debt Chains of Widows from Debt Prison

By Salah Kamal | Founder & President

Dear GlobalGiving Community,

Thank God and thank you a lot. This quarter, your generosity helped us move from “preparation and readiness” into real, documented intervention. Through our (Save Egyptian Widows from Debt Prison) Project, we protected vulnerable mothers from debt-related legal threats and potential imprisonment, keeping families together and restoring dignity.

Financial & Campaign Status

  • Total Goal: $100,000
  • Total Raised (GlobalGiving page): $11,217
  • Estimated Net Received after fees: $10,320
  • Donors: 10
  • Monthly Donors: 0
  • Remaining to Goal (GlobalGiving page): $88,783

Progress Update (What Your Support Made Possible)

This quarter, we assisted 5 mothers who were at immediate risk of imprisonment due to debt-related legal threats. Your support enabled direct debt settlements and urgent intervention so these mothers could remain with their children.

What This Means for Families

  • 5 mothers protected from debt-related legal threats and potential imprisonment
  • 5 families kept together and safe
  • 12+ children able to remain with their mothers
  • 5 fresh starts filled with hope and dignity restored
  • Sxxx (widowed mother of 3): $4,765 settlement paid after negotiation with the bank—legal threat removed and imprisonment prevented.
  • Exxx (widowed mother of 2) $2,000 (children’s education + essential living expenses)—imprisonment risk prevented.
  • Exxx (widowed mother of 3): $1,000 (medical expenses + children’s education)—imprisonment risk prevented.
  • Hxxx (widowed mother of 1): $1,500 (education + food)—imprisonment risk prevented.
  • Sxxxx (widowed mother of 3): $1,750 (children’s education + living expenses)—imprisonment risk prevented.

Case Outcomes This Quarter

Total direct settlements supported this quarter: $11,015

Community Need (Why This Still Matters)

In Egypt, the debt-imprisonment crisis remains urgent. Thousands of women—many of them widows and mothers—are pressured into signing blank cheques in moments of desperation to feed their children. Later, inflated claims and legal threats can push them toward imprisonment. This is not only a financial crisis—it is a family crisis.

Program Model (How We Work)

Our approach is designed to be fast, verified, and accountable:

  • Case verification with local partners
  • Negotiation and settlement pathways where possible
  • Legal support coordination to prevent escalation
  • Family-centered stabilization so children are not separated from their mothers

Strategic Response

Response: We prioritize high-risk cases, negotiate whenever possible to reduce settlement amounts, and coordinate with partners to move quickly—while documenting outcomes with photos and verification.

Next Quarter Plan

With continued support, next quarter we will:

  • Assist additional high-risk mothers facing immediate legal threats
  • Expand the pipeline of verified cases ready for intervention
  • Strengthen post-settlement stabilization (referrals, counseling, and pathways to skills support where available)
  • Build momentum toward recurring support so we can respond faster when a mother’s case becomes urgent

Expected Long-Term Impact

Every mother protected from debt imprisonment means:

  • Children remain with their parent
  • Families avoid trauma, displacement, and long-term instability
  • Women regain the chance to rebuild with dignity and safety

Closing

Thank you for standing with these mothers—little by little, we are making a big difference. Your donation is not just money; it is freedom, protection, and hope.

Warmly,

Salah Kamal Founder & President,
