We aim to free Egyptian widows and women imprisoned for unpaid debts, many of whom are heads of households trapped in poverty. Coerced into signing blank cheques for family needs, these women face harsh sentences for debts they cannot repay. Our project focuses on repaying their debts, providing legal assistance, and offering rehabilitation programs. By addressing these challenges, we seek to restore their freedom and dignity, empowering them to rebuild their lives and support their families.
In Egypt, 30,000 widows and female heads of households, who make up 25 % of Egypt's prison population, are imprisoned for unpaid debts. Often desperate to provide the daily necessities for their children, these women are coerced into signing blank cheques, which leads to inflated debts they cannot repay. As a result, they face lengthy prison sentences that deepen their poverty and despair. This unjust system deprives them of their freedom and their ability to support their families.
By repaying the debts of imprisoned women, this project will free them from incarceration and prevent future exploitation. We will provide legal representation to ensure fair treatment and support their release. Additionally, we'll offer rehabilitation, vocational training, and essential resources to help these women reintegrate into society and regain financial independence. By addressing their immediate needs and supporting long-term recovery, we aim to break the cycle.
By freeing women from debt and imprisonment, this project will have a profound long-term impact. These women will regain their freedom, allowing them to care for their families and contribute to their communities. With vocational training and rehabilitation, they will acquire the skills needed to achieve financial independence, breaking the cycle of poverty. Over time, this empowerment will reduce the risk of future imprisonment and promote broader gender equality and economic growth.
