During this rainy season in Brazil's Atlantic Forest, from October to March, the SOS Mata Atlantica Foundation, with the support of its partners, is planting 200 hectares with more than 500,000 native trees to restore degraded land in eight municipalities located on priority water basins such as the Tiete and Paraiba do Sul rivers, located in the southeast region of the country and close to São Paulo - the country's largest city.
Recognized as a hotspot by the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration, the Atlantic Forest is one of the most biodiverse biomes in the world. Unfortunately, it is also the most threatened in Brazil, with only 24% of its original forest cover remaining.
The forest restoration of the Permanent Preservation Areas and Legal Reserve, as oriented by Forest Code Law, will contribute to the maintenance of the ecosystem services such as climate regulation, watershed protection, soil fertility, green corridors, livelihoods, and quality of life for the community.
