Food banks are facing significant difficulties as a result of high fuel prices: food distribution became way more expensive. Additionally, both poverty and the number of new customers at food banks—which provide donated food to individuals in need—are rising. However, rising costs include not just gasoline and diesel, but also expenses for rent, heating, and electricity.
Germany’s more than 980 food banks, supported by 77,000 dedicated individuals, recover 265,000 tonnes of food annually and distribute it to around 1.5 million people affected by poverty. With their valuable commitment, they act in a spirit of solidarity and sustainability.
The food banks have been organised in the umbrella organisation Tafel Deutschland since 1995. They have different local structures and work independently, but are committed to common principles. As a non-profit organisation, Tafel Deutschland represents the interests of food banks in politics, business and society and also supports local food bank work in a variety of ways, e.g. with financial resources, donations in kind and the provision of communication materials.
The umbrella organisation is committed to improving the social and financial situation of people affected by poverty as well as combating food waste. Tafel Deutschland contributes its expertise and experience in the areas of food rescue, the effects of poverty and civil society involvement to political discussions and decision-making processes. The umbrella organisation also supports the food banks financially and conceptually in various projects. The projects aim to optimise work processes, promote social participation and diversity or improve nutritional education. Tafel Deutschland also publicises the work of the food banks in order to raise public awareness and win over more people to the idea of food banks.
