Since we last reported, we have continued to provide food boxes to more than 100 participants per month from 4 of our community centers located in Loiza, Cabo Rojo, Isabela and San Juan. In addition, we have provided nutritional educational sessions, in San Juan, to LGBT+ older adults for a total of 32 invidiuals receiving important information on nutrition, healthier cooking, and handling of foods. During the month of August, we provided three educational sessions on first aid during environmental emergencies, which included food handling and cooking during the impact of hurricanes; 59 individuals participanted in Isabela and San Juan.
During the month of September, we will be able to provide transportation to participants to local produce festivals and providing them with a small amount of funds to conduct their shopping.
Food sustainability continues to be a problem in Puerto Rico, especially for the LGBTQ+ older adult. Waves Ahead staff continues to provide life-saving services and aide.
