Our Food for Thought program, which provides a daily lunch to the grade 8 students we support, continues to be a very large part of our budgetary requirement. The program is so important for several reasons. The nutritious daily meal we serve eliminates the issue of difficulty learning on an empty stomach. It also keeps the girls in school for a full day. You see, when the students go home midday for a lunch that might or might not even be there, the girls are often required to stay home to do chores and watch younger siblings as is the cultural norm. When they stay at school for the lunch we provide, they are able to complete a full day of lessons every day. It's a real boost to their academic performance.
Our Food for Thought fundraising continues to be a focus for us this year and we appreciate the support of our donors helping to offset the unexpected increase in the demand on our budget. This is due to a few factors. One is the high cost of food in Kenya. Though inflation is easing a bit, the cost of food remains high. You can learn more about the situation here. Another cause is the huge increase in enrollment in the schools we support. Parents have opted to send their children to the schools where we do our work because the results of our efforts are evident in the achievements of the students and the word is spreading.
