Challenge

Malnutrition has many underlying causes, poverty being only one possible factor. Many other factors play into families' inability to provide their children with the macro and micronutrients they need. Rice is rich in carbohydrates but is poor in micronutrients and Bengali diets tend to over rely on this main staple. Good nutrition requires a diverse diet rich in micronutrients. Micronutrient fortified school meals can support children to overcome the dietary challenges their families face.

Solution

School meal programme is to contribute to achieving inclusive and equitable quality education and improved nutrition for primary school children (SDG 2 and 4) through a nutrition-sensitive school meal programme. A freshly-prepared nutritious cooked meal will be served to all children attending school each alternate day and a 75gm packet of fortified biscuit on the other alternate day from Saturday to Thursday in week. Each child entitlement for cooked meal and biscuit:

The project will educate and provide meal and fortified biscuits to 200 poor learners to reduce anemia prevalence and improved micronutrient status. Substantially Increased rate of enrollment, school attendance and reduced rate of school dropout and also improved health and child health and nutrition; social protection and local economies. Fortified biscuits have improved school enrollment by 14.2% and reduced the probability of drop-outs by 7.5% that impacted in communities in the long run.
