6th Report - Emergency Flood Response 2026

By Maksuda Akter Hridi | Exicutive, Partnership, OBHIZATRIK Foundation

Summary

In July 2026, Bangladesh experienced severe flash floods and waterlogging caused by continuous monsoon rainfall and upstream water flow. According to the United Nations in Bangladesh, approximately 1.28 million people were affected across several districts, with the greatest impact in Cox's Bazar, Chattogram, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Moulvibazar and Habiganj. In addition, prolonged rainfall caused severe waterlogging in parts of Dhaka, disrupting the daily lives of thousands of low-income families.

In response, OBHIZATRIK Foundation launched an emergency relief operation to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to affected communities. Emergency food assistance, relief bags, safe drinking water and cooked meals were distributed in Kurigram, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar and Dhaka, prioritizing the most vulnerable families.

With the support of generous donors and contributions received through GlobalGiving, OBHIZATRIK Foundation was able to respond quickly and efficiently, ensuring that emergency assistance reached communities when they needed it most. Through these coordinated efforts, approximately 1,200 people received immediate emergency support during the July 2026 flood response.

Challenges

The July 2026 floods created significant humanitarian challenges across the affected districts.

  • Many families lost access to food, clean drinking water and other basic necessities due to flooding and damaged infrastructure.
  • Continuous rainfall and flooded roads made it difficult to transport relief supplies and reach remote communities.
  • Low-income households, particularly daily wage earners, experienced loss of income, increasing their vulnerability.
  • In Dhaka, prolonged waterlogging disrupted transportation and left many slum communities without access to safe food and essential services.
  • The urgent need for immediate assistance required rapid coordination among volunteers, local communities and partners to ensure timely and transparent relief distribution.

Emergency Response

OBHIZATRIK Foundation mobilized its emergency response team immediately after the floods to deliver life-saving assistance to the affected communities.

  • Emergency Relief Distribution: Emergency relief bags containing essential food items and safe drinking water were distributed to flood-affected families in Kurigram, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar. The distributions were carried out in coordination with local volunteers and community representatives to ensure that assistance reached the households most in need.
  • Cooked Meal Distribution: In Dhaka, prolonged rainfall caused severe waterlogging in several low-income communities, particularly in the Mirpur slum areas. Many families were unable to cook or access food due to flooded homes and disrupted livelihoods. To address this urgent need, OBHIZATRIK Foundation prepared and distributed freshly cooked meals, providing immediate food support to families affected by the waterlogging.
  • Community Engagement: The emergency response was implemented with the active participation of local volunteers and community leaders, ensuring efficient coordination, transparent beneficiary selection and timely distribution of relief materials.

Key Achievements

  • Provided emergency humanitarian assistance to approximately 1,200 flood-affected people during the July 2026 floods.
  • Distributed emergency relief bags containing essential food items and drinking water to vulnerable families in Kurigram, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar.
  • Delivered cooked meals to families living in waterlogged slum communities in Mirpur, Dhaka.
  • Responded rapidly to emergency needs through effective coordination with volunteers and local communities.
  • Strengthened the Foundation's emergency response capacity through continued support received via GlobalGiving, enabling faster and more effective humanitarian action.

Long-Term Impact

The July 2026 emergency response helped reduce the immediate hardships faced by flood-affected families by ensuring access to food and other essential supplies during the crisis. The timely intervention protected vulnerable households from further food insecurity and demonstrated the importance of rapid humanitarian action during disasters.

The response also strengthened community collaboration and reinforced OBHIZATRIK Foundation's commitment to supporting vulnerable populations during emergencies. Continued investment in emergency preparedness and community resilience will enable faster and more effective responses to future disasters.

Conclusion

The July 2026 Emergency Flood Response reflects OBHIZATRIK Foundation's commitment to providing timely and compassionate humanitarian assistance to communities affected by natural disasters. Through emergency relief distributions in Kurigram, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar, together with cooked meal support for waterlogged communities in Dhaka, the Foundation was able to provide immediate assistance to approximately 1,200 people during the crisis.

The emergency response was made possible through the dedication of volunteers, community members and the generous support of donors, including contributions received through GlobalGiving, which enabled rapid mobilization of resources when urgent assistance was needed.

OBHIZATRIK Foundation remains committed to strengthening disaster preparedness, expanding emergency response capacity and working alongside partners and communities to build a safer, more resilient future for vulnerable people across Bangladesh.
