Decline of pollinators is a global problem that is recorded in Slovakia as well. The awareness of general public about the importance of pollinators, about the reasons and ways to help pollinators to stop this decline is low. We started to raise awareness about the importance of honey bees and other pollinators through education, experience and adventure at the same time in 2013. At our educational apiary we organize programs for students that can have personal experience with the bees.
The decline of honey bees, wild bees and other pollinators is becoming a global problem. A 30 - 50% loss in bee colonies is globally reported due to pesticides, lack of food resources and loss of shelter. In Slovakia, honeybee decline is also caused by a decrease in the number of beekeepers: the ones who retire are not replaced because of a lack of interest or resources. This deficit in awareness from general public about beekeeping jeopardizes crops, natural biodiversity, plants and nutrition.
We would like to build the first environmental center focused on pollination in Slovakia, in order to educate and raise the awareness about the importance of pollinators. We want to provide the people with a place where knowledge could be shared in any weather, in the form of an observation point for nesting places, beehives and food resources. Our awareness program will include workshops and lectures for children and general public, programs for teachers, and workshops for future beekeepers.
Since we started teaching in 2013, we have experienced positive changes among our public. Children in particular got rid of their fears. Our second target group is the potential beekeepers. More than 80% of those who participated in such a workshop are now keeping bees. More than 2100 students have visited us and more than 900 have learned the basics of beekeeping. The project will set up a better program in all weathers, make more people help the bees, with an overall effect for biodiversity.
