Every year in Ukraine, thousands of babies are born too early to breathe on their own. Without access to surfactant, a life-saving medication that helps premature infants' lungs function, many of them will not survive their first hours of life. Through our National Perinatal Support Programme "First Breath", ZDOROVI is raising funds to provide 150 doses of surfactant medication (Curosurf), a critical medication used in neonatal intensive care units. Your support will help Ukrainian doctors save
Ukraine faces a growing neonatal crisis: births dropped from 283,587 in 2020 to 176,679 in 2024, with only 168,000 expected in 2025. Meanwhile, 36,761 babies in 2024 were born prematurely, ill, or developed complications, nearly twice as many as in 2022. Surfactant therapy is vital for premature infants with underdeveloped lungs, yet many neonatal units lack supplies, putting countless newborns at risk of death or lifelong disability.
The "First Breath" program by ZDOROVI, in partnership with UNICEF, NHSU, GlobalGiving, and Ukrainian neonatologists, supports the capacity of the perinatal system. Your donations will fund and deliver 150 doses of Curosurf to five neonatal intensive care units in Ukraine, ensuring transparent distribution and saving the lives of hundreds of premature babies.
Even under bombardment, Ukraine's neonatal system fights for life. "First Breath" is our promise not to let war steal children's futures. Your support protects premature babies, strengthens hospitals, and ensures transparent, effective use of aid. Together we can improve survival rates today and build a stronger, more resilient healthcare system for generations to come - so every baby can take their first breath.
