PROJECT REPORT October 2024 – April 2025

Project of fight the injustice of human trafficking in Rwanda

Introduction

The Government of Rwanda does not fully meet the minimum standards for elimination of trafficking but is making significant efforts to do so. Therefore, Rwanda is downgraded to Tier 2 watch list.

In order to support the Government’s efforts to eliminate human trafficking, from 2019 EJO TWIFUZA organization initiated a Project of supporting the Government to fight the injustice of human trafficking through education and land transit monitoring and helping potential victims find a safe passage back to their homes.

To implement this project, EJO TWIFUZA organization from 2023 is working through the fundraising supportive partnership with the GlobalGiving in fundraising and the impact from this partnership is significant as reported in our last report of September 2023.

This report concern for the data and activities realized in a period of 6 months from October 2024 to April 2025.

FLASH ON THE ACTIVITIES REALISED IN 6 MOTHS FROM OCTOBER 2024 TO APRIL 2025.

After September 2023, Rwanda was in a period of after Presidential elections, activities were returning to normal. Our staffing team and volunteers rejoined their land transit stations for monitoring to stop human trafficking. From January 2025 the intensive wall in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)between the Government and Rebels of M23 was observed. Millions of peoples have coming refugees in and out of their country and many children was at risk of being trafficked.

To ensure that we provide the support in order to contribute to saving lives of vulnerable, more efforts have been enforced on borders and around refugees’ camps as well as in car parking stations.

 The Impact of our intervention in 6 months from October 2024 to April 2025

  • 143 young people under 20 old victims at risk of being trafficked are intercepted and saved from trafficking.
  • 488 people are educated on human trafficking in the community meeting in Rwanda and refugee camps.
  • 10 Volunteers from refugees are trained to support in fighting trafficking in refugee camps and inform on children recruitments for soldering in armed groups in DRC and Burundi.
  • 4 cases of suspect criminals of human trafficking are identified and are in investigations process in collaboration with local security institutions.
  • Our organization controls 4 additional transit monitoring sites in Northern Kivu in the DRC to identifies the roots of human trafficking and children exploitation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)for advocacy.

For other Activities realized in the period of 6 months from October 2024 to April 2025 the following are mentioned:

EJO TWIFUZA Representative participated in in the celebration of world anti trafficking day with human Right defenders in Rwanda though the invitation from the Excellency Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherland. 

EJO TWIFUZA Executive Director worked together with the NEVER AGAIN organization to develop and facilitate a project of implementing a research on human trafficking in Rwanda, a project implemented by Never Again Rwanda.

The Executive Director of EJO TWIFUZA have discussed with the Representative of the Embassy of Canada Counselor Madame Nadine on EJO TWIFUZA activities of fighting human trafficking.

The Executive Director of EJO TWIFUZA discussed with the National Program Officer- Democracy, Human Right and Gender at the Embassy of Sweden on EJO TWIFUZA activities on fighting human trafficking and how the Embassy of Sweden at Kigali can support these interventions.

The execute Director of EJO TWIFUZA have got also an opportunity to discuss with the First Secretary of the French Embassy in Rwanda on EJO TWIFUZA interventions in fighting human trafficking and the role that the France Embassy in Kigali can have for supporting the activities of protecting human rights and human right defenders in this are of intervention.
