DCF continues to provide tools for education

By Yamilet Line | Executive Director

During the second quarter of 2024, the Del Carmen Foundation (“DCF”) has expanded its reach and commitment to furthering educational opportunities for disadvantaged children in Venezuela.  With your support and the tireless commitment of our volunteers, we were able to bring hope to more than 350 children.

One of DCF’s primary missions is to help the disadvantaged youth of Venezuela by providing them with the opportunity to have access to education.  This comes in many forms, which includes providing critical supplies needed to attend school, providing scholarships for primary and second school, as well as fostering and developing participatory education wherever and whenever possible.

From April through June 2024, DCF awarded scholarships to two deserving and hard-working children, Salomé and Jose.  Because of our support, these two can continue to attend school in their locality, whereas without our help they would not have been attending any school.

Salomé, a shy and dedicated young girl who loves to play soccer, is a bright student attending school. Despite her family's struggle to make ends meet, Salomé is passionate about her education and dreams of one day being able to help her family. Her mother faced significant challenges in affording her schooling, and at one point, considered pulling Salomé out of school due to financial constraints. Thanks to the support of the Del Carmen Foundation, Salomé has received a one-year scholarship to continue her education. Her love for learning and commitment to her studies make her a deserving candidate for support, as she represents the hope and potential for a brighter future. She is a child in need of substantial support to pursue her dreams and continue her education.

José Durán, a brilliant and ambitious 15-year-old high school student from Caracas (Venezuela), lives in the marginalized area of Catia, where dreams often seem out of reach due to poverty and limited opportunities. José dreams of studying criminal justice to positively influence his community; he is convinced that criminal acts are prevented through education. In this sense, José aims to lay the foundation for a better future for himself and his family. He stands out for his high academic performance, being the best in his English class and assisting his classmates with their assignments. His mother, a hardworking single parent, struggles to support him, and the difficult economic conditions in Venezuela make it challenging for her to afford his education. Thanks to the support of the Del Carmen Foundation, José has received a one-year scholarship to continue his education and pursue his dreams.

We also held events in several neighborhoods in the capital Caracas, as well as several cities across the country, including El Junquito, Valles del Tuy, and Valencia. During these events we distributed backpacks with essential school supplies while creating a memorable experience and excitement for the children for the upcoming school year.  Because of support from donors like you, these children are now able to attend their local school and be an active participant in their development, education, and growth.

Also during the second quarter, DCF continued to develop and plan its participatory education program.  This program is designed to actively engage students in the learning process, foster critical thinking, and create a more inclusive and empowering educational environment. Our goal is to secure enough funds to begin implementing this project for a class size of 30 students. The first steps in the program include interactive teacher training so that they can work with DCF to foster an immersive educational experience.  Your donations directly contribute to the training of teachers and providing books and supplies for them and their students in our program.

Thank you for all your support, and please spread the word for the work that we do in Venezuela!
