Closing the Pig Project

By Nancy Erickson | Technical Adviser

Damascene and Claudine's Corn Yield
Damascene and Claudine's Corn Yield

We continue to see the positive impact of the pigs project in the community of Cyaruzinge. Many beneficiaries chose to sell their pigs to invest in other opportunities. About 10 people sold their pigs and used the profits to rent plots of land to grow food and hire workers to help with the cultivation labor. We spoke to one family who received a pig from HDI. Claudine and her husband Damascene sold their pig and with the profit rented a plot of land. From this land they grew over 100 kilograms of maize/corn which they used to feed their family.

Some of the pigs are currently pregnant, meaning that the profits and opportunities from these pigs will continue to grow into the future with the incoming piglets.

We have decided to discontinue this project on GlobalGiving. We are satisfied and proud with the positive impact this project has had on Cyaruzinge Village. We do not plan on purchasing any more pigs for the community since the pigs have proven to be self-sustainable so far and community members have expressed interest in other forms of income generation. If you still want to contribute towards helping the communities of potters, please look into HDI’s other projects on GlobalGiving. Thank you for your continued support. You have made a difference.
