What is your support doing for La Nuestra!

By Emilia Cebrian | Senior Programmes Manager

Our Successes

In October 2024, 16 leaders and players of La Nuestra travelled to San Salvador de Jujuy to participate in the 37th Plurinational Women’s Gathering in Argentina, where we delivered a workshop on football and feminism, set up a football field and organised a series of friendly matches, bringing together activists and other women’s collectives from all over the country.

In December, we organised a celebration with leaders, coaches, players and their families to wrap up the biweekly training sessions and celebrate our growth and successes in 2024. These training sessions, which are delivered simultaneously in 3 separate fields for a total of 150 players, will start again in March as La Nuestra resumes its activities for the year following the summer break.

As part of the Football Learning Community Initiative (Hagamos La Nuestra LATAM), we completed a draft version of our Theory of Transformation for a feminist and more equal football, which consolidates the main takeaways from the collective’s gatherings in El Salvador, Colombia, and Brazil.

Our Plans

This week, we will resume the biweekly training sessions with 150 players. These sessions continue to be held simultaneously in 3 different fields in the community, facilitating the participation of daughters, sisters, and mothers and ensuring nobody is left out due to their childcare responsibilities. In addition to the training sessions, we will continue to participate in the Liffeba neighbourhood league as we have done in previous years.

In April, we will host an in-person gathering with partner organisations in Costa Rica, Chile and Uruguay with the aim of learning from each other’s work and exchanging experiences and approaches to using football to create safe spaces for girls, women, and LGBTQIA+ people to exercise their rights.

In the context of the Coordinadora de Fútbol Sin Fronteras, a regional network that brings together women and LGBQTIA+ activists and leaders in the football ecosystem in Latin America, we will present a documentary that showcases the story and work of La Nuestra.

Our Challenges

We work to ensure the right to play and a life free from violence for women, girls, adolescents, and LGBTIQ+ people. Our goal is to provide safe and professional football training that supports their technical development and leadership skills, while also increasing the visibility of women and LGBTIQ+ people as role models in sport.

Beyond football, we take a holistic approach, addressing menstrual health, mental health, and access to justice to meet participants' broader needs. Our activities and workshops empower individuals, build community, and amplify marginalised voices. Given the challenges in our region, strengthening our capacity to sustain and grow this work remains a priority.

At a time when gender justice initiatives are facing backlash and grassroots organisations are struggling to secure funding, this support is more critical than ever. With it, we can expand partnerships with key governmental and non-governmental stakeholders through the Hagamos La Nuestra LATAM initiative, working together to break down barriers that limit women’s rights.
