A new year has begun and despite all the difficulties we have faced, including the closure of a Charitable Trust which had supported our feeding programme for many years, we were able to continue feeding our children during 2021. This is of course thanks to the generosity of our donors.
As we have said many times before well fed children are more likely to stay healthy and have a better chance of taking full advantage of the quality education we offer in our school. The breakfast porridge and balanced midday meal we provide is all that some of the children will have each day.The fortnightly sacks of maize meal and beans we provide for the very poorest families during school holidays helps those who would be close to starvation without our intervention. There is gratitude in the community but also great pride in being able to give their children a chance of a better future and a way out of poverty through education.
As always our feeding programme is a large part of our budget, and will be more so in 2022. Part of this is of course due to inflation, but this year as last year we have added costs. Because the Kenyan government has changed school holidays to make up for time lost through the lengthy school closure during the pandemic the children will have several more weeks in school and of course will continue to be fed and the cooks employed. Our nursery cohort last year was two groups instead of one, those who were ready to join in 2021 and the ones who had had only a few weeks in school in 2020. They will go through the school until they leave us aged 14, so we will have an extra class for several years. A world wide pandemic was certainly not part of Mustard Seed's plan but somehow we got through 2020 and 2021. We know that this has been because of great generosity from our donors. We could not have done it without you!
Thank you so much once again to Jude Bellingham who continues to support us and our feeding programme, thank you so much once again to all of you who have made what sometimes felt insurmountable into a possibility and then a success. Please continue to help us make the new year another happy one for the children and families of the Mustard Seed Project (Kenya).
Happy New Year.
