Help Us Continue Feeding Our Children,

By Mrs. Lynne Smith | Trustee

Thank you, Good Food Keeps us Healthy
Thank you, Good Food Keeps us Healthy

As I write this three of the UK Trustees of the Mustard Seed Project (MSP) are in Kenya. Our Founding Trustee, Rita, is there for a month and with her is Tess who is a new Trustee on her first visit to the school. She is an ex Secondary School teacher. The third Trustee is there on a brief visit but has been to the school several times before. She knows the school and staff well and will help out as much as possible while she is there.

As ever our feeding programme continues because of the generousity of our donors. Food inflation in Kenya is still ongoing and because of our new status as a Junior Secondary School we now have an extra year group of fifteen year olds, so more children to feed. Despite inflation and our increased numbers we have managed to feed all our children with porridge on arrival in the mornings and with a well balanced midday meal for another year. It is difficult to raise funds for our feeding programme because costs always escalate every year. We are so lucky to have our cooks, who always manage to make lunch look appetising.  There is very little food waste in our school! Our parents are only too pleased to think that their children are well fed at school and for some it is the only food they will have during the day, so plates are quickly emptied. We continue to supply the poorest of our families with maize meal and beans during school holidays. We have a few families in our community with children who have only gone on to eduction after leaving our school because we have provided maize meal and beans for them on an emergency basis. This has enabled them to be able to afford uniform and shoes so that the children can continue their education. "Free education" in Kenya is not really free and at secondary level, as well as uniform, shoes and stationery, children have to be able to provide text books. Life can be very tough indeed for poor people in Kenya and without our help some in our community would be very close to starvation. The help we give at this stage has enabled families to get through a particularly difficult time, sometimes after a death, job loss or perhaps a stay in hospital for which they have had to pay.

Thank you again for your help. Please continue your support, or join us if you feel you can. The smallest amount makes a difference in our community and that difference in our feeding programme is healthier children who can take full advantage of the good education we offer. That education  helps them and sometimes other family members escape the poverty they have lived with for so long.
