Feed to Learn to 100 vulnerable Children Uganda

By Mafabi Tom Robert | Executive Director

Overview
The Feed to Learn project continues to provide daily nutritious meals to 100 vulnerable children from single-mother and child-headed households in Katabe Town Council, a slum community in Uganda. Over the past reporting period, the initiative has focused on improving nutrition, health, and cognitive development to boost academic performance and reduce hunger-related illnesses. With a modest project budget of $1,500, $201 has been raised to date, which has already enabled the school to begin providing meals to children in urgent need, demonstrating the critical impact of even small contributions.

Achievements
Despite limited funding, the project has successfully delivered nutritious meals to the most vulnerable children at Future Stars Preparatory School Nursery and primary Attendance and concentration in class have noticeably improved among beneficiaries, with teachers reporting enhanced engagement and alertness. The project has also raised awareness among parents and the community on the importance of nutrition for learning, and children have begun adopting healthier eating habits. These early results affirm the transformative potential of school feeding programs in improving education and breaking cycles of poverty and malnutrition.

Key activities undertaken

Daily preparation and distribution of nutritious meals to 100 school children aged 6-12; nutritional education for children on balanced diets and healthy eating habits; engagement with parents and caregivers on supporting school nutrition programs; monitoring of children’s health and academic performance to track improvements; ensuring safe food handling and hygiene practices during meal preparation.

Next steps

Scale up meal provision as additional funding becomes available to cover the full project budget of $1,500; strengthen partnerships with local suppliers for consistent access to nutritious ingredients; introduce periodic health screenings to monitor the impact of improved nutrition on child health and learning outcomes; expand awareness campaigns on nutrition and school attendance to the wider community, targeting additional vulnerable children.

This project remains a vital intervention in ensuring that no child is left behind due to hunger, and with continued support, Feed to Learn will empower children to learn, grow, and build brighter futures.
