Together, for the past 25 years, we have helped children and families break the cycle of poverty, and have provided immediate assistance to communities living in daily danger because of unexploded bombs and mines that remain from the Vietnam war. PeaceTrees' investment in education is based on the philosophy that to create lasting positive transformation in post-conflict communities, investments must be made in partnerships, safe land (free from unexplode bombs and mines), education and infrastructure. This type of holistic approach to development, and the understanding that no one issue can be tackled on its own, has led to our many successful PeaceTrees partnerships and projects.

Our kindergarten program gives ethnic minority students a head start through stable early childhood education which improves their chances of success in primary school. Classes are taught in Vietnamese so that the children are linguistically prepared for primary and secondary school and are familiar with formal classroom instruction. This is particularly important in ethnic minority communities where children often speak languages other than Vietnamese at home and therefore have few opportunities to pursue education in public schools where lessons are taught in Vietnamese. We also provide kindergarteners with a hot nutritious lunch each day, and a safe place to play, free from dangerous UXO.

Recently, we engaged our partners in Vietnam to evaluate our kindergarten program. This evaluation found that PeaceTrees kindergarteners experience less malnutrition than other kindergarteners, PeaceTrees kindergarteners attend school more regularly, and their level of nutrition increases over the course of the school year. Our first kindergarten, the Friendship Village Kindergarten, was built in 2002 in Dong Ha City, Quang Tri Province. Since then 15 additional kindergartens have been built, one in Quang Bình and the rest in Quang Tri. This year we are excited to announce the construction of an additional three kindergartens that will educate 118 children in the 2020/21 school year. We look forward to updating you on their construction progress soon!

With the approach of spring, we’d like to give you another update about our scholarship, meal, and kindergarten programs! First, our Citizen Diplomacy travelers had the chance to dedicate Friends Forever’s new kindergarten expansion back in early January, a celebration that brought much of the community together. We are excited to witness the learning that will occur here, especially now that the school has doubled in size!

Our scholarship program is still going strong, with 256 scholarship recipients in primary and secondary school, and 7 students in University. Today we’d like to share what one of these students has to say!

Dear PeaceTrees VietNam scholarship program and donors

My name is Tuyen.

I am studying 4th grade in Cam Chinh primary and middle school. I want to give my sincere thanks to the scholarship, for giving me part of the gifts and supporting my school fee to help me continue going to school. My family life is honestly very difficult, my father died early when I was a small child, I live with my mom, my grandparents and my older brother. My mom does not have a stable job. I love my mom so much. I want to thank all of you in the scholarship program who gave me the chance to study like my friends. I promise to be a good student, to study hard and always do my best to live up to your precious help.

Thank you.

Tuyen

As the holiday season approaches, we take a moment to think of the young scholars pursuing bright futures for themselves and their families in PeaceTrees’ kindergartens.

Time and time again, research has proven that education is one of the best ways to escape poverty, a pervasive issue that digs its roots into families for generations. According to The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, “If all adults completed secondary education, 420 million could be lifted out of poverty, reducing the total number of poor people by more than half globally and by almost two-thirds in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.” Programs such as PeaceTrees’ kindergartens enable economic and emotional growth, as kindergarteners learn to navigate the school systems they will enter in first grade and prepare themselves for their futures.

In our kindergartens, over 465 bright minds are learning critical life skills and eating a daily nutritious meal provided by the compassion of the PeaceTrees community. Your donations allow us to continuously provide maintenance and support to our schools, ensuring sustainability so that future young minds can access these opportunities.

We are excited to share that in late October, we finished an expansion project for the Friends Forever Kindergarten, adding another room for children to learn. We are also proud to announce that we will be expanding our projects into Quang Bình Province over the next year, soon allowing for even more children to receive an education safe from the dangers of unexploded ordnances!

As you spend time with your loved ones this holiday season, please keep these wonderful kindergarteners in mind. Let’s continue to work hand in hand to connect these young scholars with the nurturing, enriching environments and opportunities that they deserve. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being such an important part of the PeaceTrees family as we navigate this journey and grow together.

Access to education is a proven poverty reduction measure as it allows children to go to school, develop tangible skills, and become more economically secure. PeaceTrees focuses on empowering children through three educational programs: kindergarten education, nutrition, and scholarships.

Today we are sharing a progress report on our scholarship program which you helped fund!

On August 13th and 14th, PeaceTrees awarded 180 scholarships to support students in Quang Tri Province. These young scholars received notebooks, fabric for uniforms, and funding for the expenses and fees that are often a barrier to education.

Scholarship recipients have demonstrated financial need, good study habits, or belong to ethnic minority communities. Families receiving PeaceTrees scholarships are often those who have been devastated by accidents involving unexploded ordnance (UXO). When a child or a family member is injured in a UXO accident, it is extremely difficult for the family to recover economically and afford schooling. Each of these 180 scholarships provides a student with additional tools to help them break out of the larger cycle of poverty. Today we celebrate our young scholars and wish them radiant futures.

Want to help us make an even bigger impact? You can help more children in Quang Tri Province access education by making a contribution of $50 today. On behalf of all of our scholarship recipients, thank you for your support !

We are thrilled to announce that 166 students from across our kindergartens in Quang Tri are graduating this year! After the summer, they’ll be moving onto the 1st grade. To congratulate these awesome students on their latest achievements, PeaceTrees gifted each of them a brand new school bag to use in the upcoming school year. Join us in celebrating these little grads; we know they have such bright futures ahead of them!

This year, we had a total of 461 children enrolled in our kindergartens! As you might already know, the students attending our kindergartens tend to come from low income ethnic minority communities in rural areas struggling with inadequate access to food and education.

Gifts from our generous donors provide kindergarteners with meals, fund scholarships, and crucially maintain the community buildings that the children learn and grow in!

PeaceTrees thanks you deeply for your continued support!
