Joy, a Grade 2 learner from Karanja in Kibra, regularly arrived at school looking tired, withdrawn, and
unable to respond enthusiastically to teachers or classmates. Through close observation and
collaboration with the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) team, it was discovered
that she often walked a long distance to school without eating breakfast due to food insecurity at
home.
Recognizing that hunger was affecting both her health and ability to learn, the feeding team
arranged for Joy to receive breakfast immediately upon arriving at school before the normal break
time.
Within a few weeks, noticeable changes were observed. Joy became more energetic, arrived at
school with a brighter disposition, actively participated in lessons, and engaged more confidently in
school activities. The simple intervention of providing an early morning meal significantly improved
her well-being and readiness to learn.
Her story illustrates how timely nutritional support can positively influence a learner's health,
concentration, school attendance, and overall participation.
Your support is what makes this possible; help us nourish young minds and ensure that every child
has the chance to learn and thrive.
