Gratitude and Update on Our Chicken Farm Project

By Mrs. Paula Chomba | Chairman and Project Leader

Subject: Gratitude and Update on Our Chicken Farm Project

We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to express our deepest gratitude for your generous contribution to our chicken farming initiative, aimed at supporting orphans, widows, and impoverished single families through the endeavors of our NGO, WOW Tanzania.Your support has played a pivotal role in enabling us to embark on this impactful journey. As of now, 90% of the profits that will be generated from our chicken farm will directly contribute to sustaining the mission of WOW Tanzania.

When we initially ventured into this project, we encountered an unexpected challenge – the scarcity of trained chicken keepers. Despite the hurdle, we saw an opportunity to fulfill one of our primary goals: providing employment and job training to those who would otherwise be unemployed. Consequently, we hired Shabbani, a young man facing poverty, and invested in training him to become a proficient chicken keeper. We are thrilled to report that Shabbani has excelled in his role, and our flock of nearly 2000 chickens, comprising layers and broilers, is flourishing under his care.  Our commitment extends beyond financial sustainability. We are actively reaching out to the community by donating chickens to widows and underprivileged children in local schools, ensuring that the most vulnerable members of our neighborhood have access to nutritious food, including chicken. While our successes are encouraging, we also face challenges. The frequent power outages in Tanzania posed a threat to our stock, leading to the unfortunate loss of some chickens. To address this, we invested in a second freezer, which, although necessary, strained our budget. Additionally, the need for more space resulted in the loss of 400 chickens. Currently, we are in the process of renting an adjacent chicken coop to facilitate free-range farming, albeit with added financial pressure.

On a positive note, one of our notable achievements is providing employment to Anna, a mother sponsored through our child sponsorship program. By supplying her with chicken innards to sell, a Tanzanian delicacy, Anna will soon become successful in supporting her family independently. This success story exemplifies the transformative impact of our initiatives on the lives of those we aim to empower. Although we are not yet profitable, we are on the verge of breaking even. Once profitability is achieved, we envision expanding our programs to support more children in their education journey, offer job training, and facilitate entrepreneurship. The ultimate goal is to create stable home environments for these children, steering them away from the challenges of life on the streets. While we remain optimistic, our journey is undeniably long and arduous. Your support is crucial to help us stay afloat during this challenging period. The expenses associated with salaries, chickens, feed, medicine, lights, heaters, and other necessities are substantial, making it impossible for us to sustain without your generous assistance. Your continued support is instrumental in ensuring the success and sustainability of our initiatives.

Enclosed with this message, please find our January newsletter for more detailed updates on our progress and activities. Once again, we express our heartfelt appreciation for your ongoing support. Your commitment to WOW Tanzania continues to make a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve.

With gratitude,
