In a country with vast social inequality, where 47% of the region's population has only elementary education, FDV School tackles high dropout rates in the port area of Rio. Offering free Secondary and High School education with extended learning through a varied curriculum, it aims to foster youth leadership and build community bonds. The school also supports sports, community therapy, daily meals, and social services for students, many of whom live on less than one thousand reais per capita.
Social inequality in Brazil is severe, reflected in the high dropout rates, particularly in the port area of Rio de Janeiro. Nearly 40% of men and 30% of women aged 25 to 34 have not completed high school, a figure significantly higher than the OECD average. Among youth from lower socioeconomic classes, 17% are out of school, and only 60% complete high school. In 2023, 400,000 children aged 6 to 14 were not attending school, and 9 million did not graduate from high school.
FDV has been working to improve the dire educational conditions in the port area, currently achieving a zero dropout rate. With a diverse curriculum and comprehensive support for its students, along with a team of specialized teachers holding postgraduate degrees, the school ensures that students graduate successfully and have the opportunity to enroll in public and private universities in Brazil.
Improving education for low-income children and youth can reduce social inequality, increase social mobility, and boost economic development. Quality education helps break the cycle of poverty, reduces crime, and enhances health and well-being. It also fosters civic engagement and benefits future generations, creating a positive cycle of development and opportunities for society as a whole.
