Project Report | Nov 12, 2023
A path to economic Resillience

By Seth Mwangi | Service Delivery Manager

Introduction

In the pursuit of fostering economic resilience and uplifting vulnerable families in Kenya, this report highlights the impact of an economic empowerment initiative implemented by Macheo. The objective is to empower families, particularly those facing socio-economic challenges, by providing them with tools, resources, and support to enhance their financial well-being.

Objectives

1. Financial Literacy Programs:

Macheo conducted consistent financial literacy programs to equip families with essential skills for effective income management. This included budgeting, saving, and understanding basic financial principles.

2. Micro-Enterprise Development:

The initiative focused on setting up viable and sustainable micro-enterprises for families, offering them an opportunity to generate income independently. This involved identifying suitable business ventures aligned with the skills and interests of the clients.

3. Risk Mitigation:

To address the inherent risks associated with starting a business, Macheo provided cash transfers at the outset of these micro-enterprises so that the clients could meet some of the challenges they were facing like paying house rent and medical cover. This initial financial support helped to mitigate risks and ensures a smoother establishment of the businesses.

4. Agricultural Empowerment:

Recognizing the significance of agriculture in Kenya, Macheo educates families on cost-effective farming techniques. This includes sustainable farming practices, crop selection, and maximizing yield with available resources.

Monitoring and Support:

Macheo implements a rigorous monitoring system to offer continuous support to the micro-enterprises established by the beneficiaries. This involves regular check-ins, guidance, and addressing challenges that may arise during the course of their entrepreneurial journey.

Outcomes

As a result of Macheo's economic empowerment initiative, vulnerable families in Kenya have experienced positive outcomes:

Increased financial literacy and improved money management skills.

Successful establishment and growth of micro-enterprises, contributing to family income.

Enhanced agricultural practices leading to improved food security.

Mitigation of financial risks through timely cash transfers.

Empowerment to navigate economic challenges creatively.

Challenges

Despite these successes, the initiative has faced challenges, including market fluctuations, shifts in employment opportunities, and environmental factors such as drought impacting farming zones.

Success Story

Substitute your worry with work and see miracles happen,” is the adage that best summarizes what Faith *not her real name* has been able to turn her life around with sheer determination and perseverance.

Faith, 38, a single mother of three – two daughters and one son –  has faced some of life’s toughest challenges, but, instead of agonizing and victimizing herself into inaction and self-pity, she chose to rise above her situation and face her challenges head-on. Consequently, she has been able to put her eldest daughter, 18, through university, and she is now educating her other children: one in the fourth and final year of secondary school and the last born, the boy, in the second year of secondary school.

A rough divorce and lack of a support system during her trying times drove Faith to a mental breakdown, and she alienated herself from family and friends as a result. Not only did this put her children at risk of dropping out, but it also affected her relationship with her family, especially her mother. However, with counseling sessions and her own determination to get better, Faith crossed to the other side of healthy living. Through mediation, she was able to go through reconciliation with her family, especially her mother, who, in a show of support and acceptance, took in her grandchildren while Faith was working in the urban side.

Because Faith is such a talented hairstylist, she was taken through a small training that taught her essential aspects of running a successful business and empowered her with important equipment to kick start her trade. Realizing she would need more income, she decided to relocate her business to the urban side, where she would find more customers. This proved to be an excellent decision because, in no time, Faith was back on her feet; she sent money to her mother regularly as upkeep for her children and supported her eldest daughter in university.

Today, Faith is feeling her confident self again, a strong, business-savvy woman who takes her responsibilities seriously. She is not stopping there, she has dreams of expansion to include wholesale trading of beauty products and braids. This way, she is giving herself and her family economic stability and securing their future.

Faith never stops to express her gratitude for the support she has received. We continue to monitor and follow up on her already excellent progress, and we wish her the very best in her future endeavours. Her story is a testament to the power of the human spirit, and the endless possibilities one can achieve with just a little help.

Conclusion

Macheo's economic empowerment initiative stands as a beacon of hope for vulnerable families in Kenya, offering them the tools and support needed to build a more secure and resilient economic future. Through continued efforts, the organization remains committed to uplifting communities and fostering sustainable economic growth.
