One Girl's Story. More Futures to Change!

By Connie Duran | President

Ana
Ana

In México, many children are born into violent families, just like our girls. They begin life in environments where they are denied the safety, love, and guidance they need to develop the skills to become independent and self-sufficient adults.

Ana is one of those girls. She was born into a violent family, and by the age of five she was expected to care for her younger siblings, including a one-year-old baby. Before arriving at Puerta Abierta, she had already lived in two different children's homes.

Everything changed when she found a safe place at Puerta Abierta. For the first time, someone cared for her, listened to her, and gave her the stability of daily routines. Most importantly, she experienced what it felt like to be truly loved.

Little by little, the possibility of a different future began to emerge. Breaking the cycle of violence did not happen overnight. Ana had to learn to trust, to make her own decisions, and to believe that her story had not already been written—that she had the ability to create her own future.

Ana has graduated from university and is living an independent, self-sufficient, and responsible life. Most importantly, she is happy. She also knows that Puerta Abierta will always be her home and that we will always be here for her.

Ana's story is not unique. Thanks to the support of people like you, eight girls have now graduated from university, and each one is building an independent, responsible, and hopeful future. Every graduation represents a life transformed and a cycle of violence broken.

Changing a life is not just an idea—it is happening every day at Puerta Abierta. Like Ana, many more girls need your support to heal, grow, study, and build a future free from violence.
