Facilitating Access to Clean Water in Kibumba

Families in Kibumba, Nyiragongo Territory, continue to face a serious lack of access to safe and reliable drinking water. Women and children are particularly affected, often walking long distances to collect water from sources that may be unsafe. This situation increases health risks, makes hygiene more difficult and takes valuable time away from school, family life and economic activities. Our Facilitating Access to Clean Water in Kibumba project was created to help change this reality by developing a sustainable community water supply system.

The project is currently in its preparation and resource-mobilization phase, with implementation planned to begin in November 2026. We are identifying qualified trainers, technical facilitators and community participants who will support the planned activities. The project will include a technical and geophysical assessment to identify the most suitable water source, followed by the development of a borehole or protected spring, depending on the findings. Water storage, distribution points and community kiosks will help bring safe water closer to households, while hygiene education and a trained local water committee will strengthen community ownership and sustainability.
