Clean Water Access for Kibumba

Facilitating Access to Clean Water in Kibumba – Update

1. Context and Rationale

Kibumba, located in the Nyiragongo territory, continues to face a severe shortage of clean drinking water. Families—especially women and children—walk long distances every day to fetch water that is often unsafe. This situation exposes the community to waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and acute diarrhea.
The absence of water collection and distribution infrastructure also limits economic activities, compromises hygiene, and affects the dignity of households.

In response, this project aims to provide a sustainable and community-driven solution to this urgent need.

2. General Objective

Ensure safe, sustainable, and equitable access to clean drinking water for the people of Kibumba, while strengthening local capacity for long-term management.

3. Specific Objectives

  • Identify a reliable water source through a technical and geophysical study.
  • Install a borehole or protected spring, along with a distribution system including a reservoir and community water kiosks.
  • Educate the population on hygiene and safe water practices.
  • Train a local water committee to manage, monitor, and maintain the infrastructure.

4. Approach and Methodology

The project will be implemented in several steps:

  1. Technical Study
Conduct a geophysical assessment to select the safest and most sustainable water source.
  2. Water Supply Installation
Construction of a borehole or protected spring, installation of a storage tank and accessible community water points.
  3. Education and Awareness
Training sessions on household hygiene, water management, and prevention of waterborne diseases.
  4. Community Empowerment
Establish and train a local management committee to ensure long-term sustainability.

5. Estimated Budget

The total estimated cost of the project is USD 18,500.
To date, thanks to our collaboration with GlobalGiving, we have already raised USD 101. This initial support demonstrates trust in our work and motivates us to continue mobilizing resources.

(Detailed budget breakdown is intentionally kept minimal to maintain a clear and concise report.)

6. Current Progress

  • Project launch date: November 2025
  • Current phase: Identification of trainers and selection of participants for hygiene and management training.
  • Ongoing efforts: Resource mobilization to complete the required funding.

7. Expected Impact

  • Significant reduction in waterborne diseases.
  • Time saved for women and children, creating more opportunities for education and economic activities.
  • Improved hygiene practices and overall quality of life.
  • Establishment of a local structure capable of managing water access sustainably.

8. Call to Donors

We extend a sincere and urgent call to individuals, partners, and organizations committed to humanitarian action:
Your support can transform the lives of hundreds of families in Kibumba.
Every contribution, no matter the amount, brings the community closer to safe, clean, and accessible water.

Thanks to our partnership with GlobalGiving, we are confident that we will reach our funding goal. Together, we can build a sustainable solution and save lives.

9. Acknowledgments

We express our deep gratitude to all those who have already contributed. Your generosity brings hope and paves the way for a healthier future for Kibumba.
Thank you for continuing to stand with us in this vital mission.
