Lanta Animal Welfare is the only veterinary source for the surrounding islands and mainland areas. Due to funding levels, the mobile sterilizations and vaccination clinics visit 7 areas annually. Many rural communities outside of these locations do not know how to get help, resulting in severe overpopulation and suffering of the cats and dogs. Expanding the mobile clinic operations will dramatically improve cat and dog welfare and reduce the risk of human rabies.
Lanta Animal Welfare only operates mobile sterilization clinics in 7 local areas. The transfer of animals from rural communities to these clinics is infrequent due to lack of catchers, the long journey, and a lack of community assistance. The severe overpopulation and suffering of cats and dogs in southern Thailand continues to worsen, along with the risk of rabies.
By expanding the mobile sterilization operations Lanta Animal Welfare's sterilization catchment area will greatly increase which will stabilize the dog populations and vaccinate all dogs for rabies. There will also be an increase in the number of people seeking veterinary care and sterilization for their own animals.
Over the long-term, the dog population will be stabilized with at least 80% of dogs sterilized in all visited communities. It will also eliminate the risk of the spread of rabies, and veterinary services will be provided to areas that had never had such services. Future sterilization initiatives will be facilitated as every animal that undergoes sterilization is permanently marked by tattoo or ear notch to prevent re-capture.
