This project will help Imani Collective grow our impact for artisans in Kenya by renovating and expanding our ethical workshops. The project will will unfold in a few phases. For Phase 1, we will use funds for renovations on a new workshop space in Old Town, Mombasa, which will bring the building up to code to make it safe for our artisans. Phase 1 funds will also provide new equipment and proper spaces for operating our holistic programs, like child care, daily meals and more.
Imani Collective has received increased demand from clients wishing to purchase from our artisan-made workshop, but we have been limited on space - and therefore capacity - to take on these orders. These orders have the potential to provide necessary cash flow to not only sustain our operations and holistic programs, but also to scale them, which would establish long-term, reliable employment and support for our community. We have a three-phased plan to increase capacity, and just need funding.
For Phase 1 of this project, we've secured a new, larger workshop space in Old Town, Mombasa that will allow us to immediately increase our capacity. However, the building needs renovations to be a safe, ethical space. This project will help bring the new building up to code, as well as provide new sewing equipment we haven't been able to purchase due to space constraints. The funds will also help re-imagine our existing space to better accommodate our holistic programs.
By expanding our workshops, we will be able to foster greater community among our artisans, as well as take on larger client orders that will provide necessary cash flow to sustain our artisan salaries and holistic programs, like literacy, free child care, food and more. These functions are essential to creating dignified employment opportunities for our artisans, which empowers them to provide for their families and break generational cycles of poverty in Kenya.
