This project allows 2,000 animals per year, dogs and cats, to be sterilized free of charge. These animals are from vulnerable street communities in Colombia, helping reduce the cycle of abandonment, overpopulation and abuse. The sterilization of these animals also allows the reduction of infectious diseases and cancer, providing them with a healthier life.
The number of animals in street conditions in Colombia are alarming. In the year 2023, three million animals were reported wandering on the streets. Most of them, unfortunately, are not sterilized. Additionally, the reproduction figures of a female canine and its offspring show that they can give five thousand puppies in five years. For a female feline, the figures show that the number for her and her offspring can reach up to twenty-eight thousand eight hundred twelve kittens in five years.
Carrying out 2,000 sterilizations of street dogs and cats per year in vulnerable communities in Colombia will contribute to reducing the overpopulation of street dogs and cats. We know that sterilization is the most efficient way to control the number of animals since it significantly reduces birth rates. Likewise, the numbers of abuse and infections are reduced, breaking the cycle of abandonment.
The reduction in the overpopulation of dogs and cats and the reduction in the numbers of abandonment and abuse is the greatest impact on the communities. However, there are other benefits, such as the reduction of infectious diseases (since they are no longer in a herd after a female in heat), reduction in breast and prostate cancer, and reduction in bite wounds (since aggressiveness is reduced and ultimately life expectancy is increased).
