Every Step Matters: Giving Vulnerable Children the Dignity to Walk Back to School

By Seguya Ivan | Project leader

For many children, a new school term begins with excitement—the anticipation of seeing friends, opening new books, learning new lessons and moving one step closer to their dreams. But for children growing up in vulnerable families, returning to school can begin with a painful question: “Do I have what I need to go back?”
Something as basic as a pair of school shoes can become an overwhelming financial burden for a struggling family. Some children return wearing worn-out shoes that no longer protect their feet. Others depend on oversized footwear passed down from older siblings. Some may face the heartbreaking possibility of attending school without suitable shoes at all.
We believe no child should have to choose between education and dignity.
Our school shoe initiative is helping remove one of the practical barriers that can keep vulnerable children from returning to school confidently. Through the generosity of donors, children can receive suitable school shoes that allow them to walk to school safely, participate in daily activities and sit in the classroom without feeling different because of what they lack.
But this is about much more than footwear.
A pair of shoes can restore confidence. It can restore dignity. It can restore a sense of belonging.
When a child receives shoes, they are receiving more than something to wear—they are receiving a message that their education matters, their dreams matter and their future matters.
And when this support is combined with school fees, books, pens, meals, uniforms, counselling and other essential educational needs, it becomes part of a much larger investment in a child's future.
As our children prepare to return to school and progress into the next stage of their education, we want them to walk through the school gate with confidence—not embarrassment; with hope—not fear; and with determination—not uncertainty.
Your support can put shoes on a child's feet and hope in their heart.
Together, we can help vulnerable children take the next step toward education, opportunity and a future they can be proud of.
Every child deserves to walk into school with dignity. Every dream deserves a chance. Every step matters.
