Summary

With your support, international development nonprofit ACDI/VOCA will conduct a one-day, educational Climate Camp this summer in Kingston, Jamaica. The camp will prepare 200 Jamaican youth ages 8-17 to become change agents in their communities. Climate Camp will feature age-appropriate training sessions, multimedia presentations, small-group discussions, hands-on activities, games, and competitions, which will provide participating youth with strategies to combat the effects of climate change.

Challenge

Jamaica is at the front lines of climate change, extremely vulnerable to the impacts of severe weather events, including island-wide droughts, unpredictable rainfall, and hurricanes. Ten natural disasters in ten years have cost Jamaica nearly $1.5 billion. Knowledge and practice surveys have revealed that Jamaicans, especially those in farming communities lack awareness of climate change and the actions to take to reduce its negative impacts.

Solution

Jamaica's youth are effective change agents in their communities. They are eager to share newly acquired knowledge and skills for the good of all. By participating in this summer's Climate Camp, 200 youth will have the opportunity to learn about the actions they can take to combat climate change and be equipped to share this knowledge with their families, schools and in their communities as they work together to combat climate change.

Long-Term Impact

By demonstrating climate-smart behaviors and actions in their schools and communities, the newly trained youth will advance the climate change awareness and advocacy efforts currently taking place in Jamaica and improve national resilience. Following the anticipated success of Climate Camp in Kingston, further camps will be implemented in other communities to give more youth a chance to help fight the effects of climate change. Together with your support, we can make a real difference.
