Project Report | Feb 7, 2011
The education and skills give them the bargaining

By Beatrice Vanaja | Project Leader

Mrs. Visalatchi
Mrs. Visalatchi

Mrs. Visalatchi, is the vocational teacher of our special school for child labourers in Alamarathupatti, a small village in Trichy district. Most of the children who attend the special school were earlier employed in goat rearing or mat weaving. Mrs. Visalatchi teaches them the alternate livelihood skills in stitching, embroidery, basket making, and making paintings with waste iron wires. She says the skills taught give the children confidence and the skills in stitching help them in stitching their torn clothes, fix buttons, etc. Two of her students Ayyanar (16) and Podumani (17) got skilled in embroidery while they were in our special schools. Now they are employed in a textile industry in Tiruppur and earning Rs.100/- per day. This is more than twice the wages paid locally in Musiri panchayath in which their village is located.

When a child is unskilled he is exploited. Once he gets skilled and educated, he gains bargaining power and knows to protect him from exploitation. This is made possible only by educating the children, says Mrs. Visalatchi. And educating them in turn is possible only by people like you who support us in running the schools. So kindly continue supporting us and we request you to spread words to your friends and relatives.
