As we all now, California has been overwhelmed by natural disasters in the last several years. Since 2017, Sonoma CART has been responding to wildfires and floods in Northern California. Of all the largest wildfires in California history, most have occured within the last 8 years, so we have been busy.
This year, Sonoma CART has been busy building capacity for animal disaster response, as well as helping in direct response. We deployed for over 30 days to Plumas County (about 5 hours away) to assist with the Dixie Fire, the second largest in California history. Here, we evacuated animals from behind fire lines, managed small and large animal shelters, and provided shelter-in-place care for animals who had to stay behind in evacuation zones. We also set up free veterinary clinics for the community, since all but one veterinarian in the huge county had to evacuate. We assisted over 400 animals in this disaster. We have also advanced our training and expanded our training opportunties to neighboring counties. By collaborating and sharing our resources and knowledge with neighboring counties, we will all be safer. We are working non-stop to be ready and equipped for whatever disasters may lay ahead.
We receive no government funding and are entirely funded by the community and grants. Your help makes all the difference in our ability to save animal lives during a disaster.
