Thanks to the generous support of our donors, Rainforest Conservation Foundation has continued to give young people meaningful opportunities to learn about rainforest conservation by taking part in it firsthand.
During this reporting period, students participated in practical conservation activities across our rainforest reserves and restoration sites. These experiences included planting native rainforest trees, learning about local plants and wildlife, exploring restored rainforest habitat, and understanding why connected habitat is essential for threatened species such as the southern cassowary.
During the last financial year 360 students from 5 schools participated in conservation activities across our reserves. Together, they planted 4,311 native rainforest trees, and contributed 2,124 volunteer hours to rainforest restoration.
By working alongside experienced conservation staff and volunteers, students saw how individual actions can contribute to the recovery of an entire ecosystem. Planting a tree was not simply a one-day activity—it gave each young person a tangible connection to the rainforest and a reason to return, observe its growth and remain involved in its protection.
The project also helped students develop practical skills in teamwork, environmental observation and responsible land stewardship. Through citizen-science activities, students are being encouraged to photograph and record the trees they have planted and the species they discover. These observations can create a lasting record of both the students’ involvement and the changing biodiversity of each site.
One of the most encouraging outcomes has been the enthusiasm shown by the students. For many, this was an opportunity to move beyond classroom learning and experience conservation as something active, achievable and relevant to their future.
Your support has helped us nurture not only young trees, but also young conservationists. These students will carry their knowledge and experiences into their homes, schools and communities, helping to build a new generation committed to protecting Australia’s precious rainforests.
Thank you for making this work possible.
