Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) remains a harmful traditional practice affecting millions of girls worldwide. In some Nigerian communities, girls continue to face the risk of FGM due to cultural beliefs, social pressure, and limited awareness of its physical and psychological consequences. The DIHYA Foundation seeks to protect girls by educating mothers, caregivers, traditional leaders, and community members on the dangers of FGM and promoting positive alternatives health practices.
Female Genital Mutilation refers to the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs, for non-medical reasons. It is often performed on young girls, sometimes during infancy, childhood, or adolescence. FGM has no health benefits and can cause severe physical, emotional, and psychological harm. Girls may experience excessive bleeding, infections, chronic pain, childbirth complications, trauma, and lifelong health challenges.
Experience has shown that when communities are informed, attitudes can change. When mothers understand the health risks, many choose to protect their daughters. When respected leaders speak out, communities listen. When girls are educated about their rights and health, they become powerful advocates for change. By engaging in and educating community stake, we will get that change.
With donor support, this project will: Reach at least 5,000 women and girls with anti-FGM education. * Increase community awareness of the health risks and human rights implications of FGM. * Strengthen the capacity of mothers and caregivers to protect their daughters. * Reduce community acceptance of FGM. * Create a network of community champions committed to ending the practice. * Contribute to a future where every girl can grow up healthy, confident, and free from harmful traditional pract
