Project Report | Dec 23, 2024
Awareness Raising on Children Related Laws

By Waqas Abid | CEO of Good Thinkers Organization-Pakistan

Introduction

The "Non-Formal Education Centers" project continues to address critical issues of child labor and lack of education in Kasur. By engaging communities, raising awareness, and providing educational opportunities, we aim to transform lives and foster a brighter future for children.

 Progress Overview

During the current reporting period, we conducted a significant Awareness Seminar on child labor laws, engaging 29 key stakeholders, including community leaders, shopkeepers, industry representatives, and members of the local government.

 Key Activities and Outcomes

  1. Awareness Seminar on Child Labor Laws
    • Participants: 29 stakeholders from various sectors, including representatives from industries, workshops, and local businesses.
    • Topics Discussed:
      • Overview of national and international laws addressing child labor.
      • Penalties for violating child labor laws.
      • The moral and social responsibilities of employers and the community.
    • Key Outcome:
      • Participants expressed grave concern over the prevalence of child labor in industries, shops, and workshops.
      • A unanimous demand was made for the Labor Department to take strict action against violators of child labor laws.
  2. Community Engagement
    • Strengthened partnerships with stakeholders to build a collaborative effort against child labor.
    • Empowered participants to advocate for education and the rights of children in their respective communities.
  3. Support for Non-Formal Education Centers
    • Continued provision of education to 34 children at our center in a remote area of Kasur, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for learning.

 Challenges and Responses

  1. Challenge: Resistance from some community members engaging children in labor.
    • Response: Intensified awareness campaigns to emphasize the long-term benefits of education and the legal consequences of child labor.
  2. Challenge: Limited Resources
    • Response: Maximized the impact of available resources through effective planning and by seeking partnerships with other organizations and donors.

 Success Stories

One of the highlights of this period was the active participation of shopkeepers and industry representatives in the seminar. Several attendees committed to reducing child labor in their businesses and pledged to advocate for children's education in their communities.

 Future Plans

  1. Expand Outreach:
    • Conduct similar awareness seminars in additional villages and towns within Kasur to engage a broader audience.
  2. Enhance Educational Support:
    • Provide more resources, such as books, furniture, and digital tools, to children in our Non-Formal Education Centers.
  3. Advocacy Efforts:
    • Strengthen collaboration with the Labor Department and other authorities to ensure strict enforcement of child labor laws.
  4. Mentorship Program:
    • Establish a mentorship initiative where older children at our centers guide and support younger ones.

Conclusion

The "Non-Formal Education Centers" project continues to make strides in addressing child labor and promoting education in Kasur. The recent Awareness Seminar demonstrated the growing community support for this cause, with stakeholders recognizing their roles in ending child labor and supporting children’s rights.

We are deeply grateful to our donors and partners for their ongoing support. Together, we can achieve a future where every child is educated, empowered, and free from labor exploitation.
