Did you know that 3-4 times as many African Americans are harmed or die during pregnancy or birth compared to European Americans? America ranks 60th amongst other nations for maternal mortality. Shut out by a system that literally denies them healthcare, this project gives access to FREE midwifery care for 500 pregnant women per year; connects them to essential support and resources; and educates and empowers them to acheive the safe outcome that is EVERY woman's dream. #MaternalHealth matters!
The USA is experiencing an unprecedented rise in the numbers of women lost during pregnancy, birth or postpartum,while other developed and developing countries are finally seeing a reduction. Black women and babies are the largest demographic to suffer these poor outcomes.This project will affect 500 pregnant women in Central Florida who are at-risk simply due to their race, socio-economic or citizenship status and may otherwise be denied the essential maternity care needed to keep them safe.
Commonsense Childbirth offers FREE maternity healthcare at the 'Easy Access' clinic and FREE support and education services at community-located 'Perinatal Safe Spots'. Culturally-competent midwife-led teams and MCH paraprofessionals and volunteers, address health issues, make referrals and liaise with other hospitals and agencies to reduce disparities. Women, families and communities are educated and prepared to navigate, advocate and raise awareness about maternal health disparities in the US
This project will continue to provide safety-net services for 500 women annually giving at-risk women a more equitable chance for a healthy birth outcome. A full term, breast feeding baby, a healthy mother and an intact, bonded family benefits everyone and secures a healthy future for our communities. The training and services offered develop the maternal child health workforce and fosters local investment and awareness in community initiatives addressing the maternal health crisis in the USA.
