I've now been working with Aravind for 15 years, yet whenever I visit, I am still surprised.
My big surprise on my trip in March 2025 was meeting a girl and boy that I introduced you to 12 years ago -- Diwakar and his little sister Rithika.
The children and their mother have the genetic form of retinoblastoma (eye cancer), which is extremely virulent and needs to be treated very early. Diwakar and his mother each lost an eye to the disease. The family was advised to bring their new baby in as soon as possible, and Aravind was able to save her vision in both eyes.
To see brother and sister as teenagers, completely cancer-free, and moving on with their lives, was the best surprise ever! Diwakar is studing engineering, and Rithika is in 9th grade.
Thank you for your ongoing support of Aravind's work to eliminate needless blindness. Since the Ring of Hope program started, you've helped more than 900 patients with eye cancer receive full treatment -- diagnostic scans, genetic testing, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, prosthetics, and counseling.
You've changed lives -- no big surprise there! Just so much gratitude!
