We are now supporting a growing number of young people that we first met & supported when they were children living on the streets, to go on to vocational training & University. Some of these young people stayed in Kimbilio homes & others we helped to return to their families. We maintained contact with them all paying for their primary and secondary school education. Having access to this training will empower them to achieve their goals, find employment & feel fully included in society again.
There is a high rate of poverty and unemployment in D.R.Congo. The children supported by Kimbilio have spent time living on the streets leading to a sense of disconnection. The cost of higher education is prohibitive for families on a low income which is the majority of the population in Lubumbashi. This results in a low skills based population, low standard of living and quality of life. Much of the population are living on $1 a day or less.
Providing funds for Kimbilio young people to attend vocational training and University will provide them with the sense of hope for the future that they have longed for. It will open up doors to enable them to find employment and provide stability in their lives. Those who wish to form their own families will be in a more stable place to look after them breaking the cycle which can happen when children live on the streets that their own children also live on the streets.
It is our sincere hope that by providing former street children with vocational training and University education it will break the cycle of poverty. The more young people that are offered such opportunities and fully integrated into society, the more likely that in the longer term a sense of hope for the wider country can be built.
