In Turkana, poverty remains widespread, with 120,043 households living under high levels of deprivation. The project seeks to directly support 1,250 vulnerable households, including women, the elderly, youth, and men. The challenges faced by these groups stem from severe food insecurity driven by climate change, loss of livestock, conflict, poor infrastructure, limited economic opportunities, the burden on women-headed households, and systemic deprivation of financial resources and human capital.
To address these issues, the project proposes a comprehensive package of interventions. 800 households will be supported in adopting climate-smart farming practices, while 100 households will receive camels to restore their livelihoods. A further 150 women-led households will be facilitated to establish meaningful businesses, 100 elderly-led households will benefit from monthly cash transfers, and 100 youth-led households will be engaged in Cash for Work activities. In addition, all 1,250 targeted households will receive capacity-building training tailored to their beneficiary category. Collectively, these activities aim to stabilize food security and strengthen resilience among the most vulnerable.
However, the project has not yet been implemented as proposed due to insufficient funding. Save The Pastoralists Kenya (STP) is therefore appealing to donors and well-wishers to provide financial support to complete these activities. With adequate funding, the project will deliver tangible improvements in food security, livelihoods, and resilience for vulnerable households in Turkana.
