Save The Pastoralists Kenya is working to reduce poverty in Turkana County. The project targets 1,250 vulnerable households, including women, the elderly, youth, and men facing extreme challenges.
Poverty in the area is mainly due to food insecurity. This results from climate change, loss of livestock, conflicts, poor infrastructure, and limited job opportunities. Women-headed households and a lack of financial and human resources also contribute.
The project plans to support 800 households in climate-smart farming. It will buy camels for 100 households and help 150 women-led households start small businesses. Another 100 elderly-led households will receive monthly cash, while 100 youth will participate in Cash for Work programs.
All 1,250 households will receive training to build their skills. These actions aim to improve food security and stability. However, the project is yet to receive funding and needs support to carry out these planned activities.
