The We women foundation enables the women of Burma to make and influence policy decisions within their communities that would otherwise be made by others. Through our campaign - Educate One, Empower Thousands - We women is committed to raising awareness and funds for supporting women from marginalized ethnic communities of Burma in their pursuit of meaningful educational and career objectives thereby promoting women's leadership in a critical moment in Burma's history.
Many women in Burma desire more equality and the ability to make individual choices without being limited by gender-prescribed roles. They face gender discrimination on a regular basis. For example, women need higher marks than men and for professional degrees like engineering or medicine, only a small number of seats are available to women. Receiving a higher education will help women to promote equality but there is little external support for higher education in Burma.
We women strongly believes that higher education gives women the opportunity to work in leadership positions where they can influence change, drive social reform and empower thousands more. We also believe that it is not foreigners who can sustain true social change in Burma, but that the people from Burma themselves are the decision makers of their country's future. The funds raised by this campaign, will go towards leadership programs that focus on empowering women.
We are already seeing positive impacts based on our alumni students. Our most recent student graduated with a Masters degree and now holds an esteemed position as a policy advisor in Burma where she has the ability to influence policy changes to bring about social reform in Burma.
