Cultivating Lasting Well-Being

Project: Empowering 1,000 Women in Acapulco After Hurricanes Otis and John

"True recovery happens when people once again feel part of a community that listens to them, values them, and walks alongside them."

Thanks to your trust and generosity, we continue to strengthen the emotional recovery of women affected by Hurricanes Otis and John. During this phase, we placed special emphasis on older women living in rural communities, who face unique challenges related to isolation, accumulated losses, and limited access to support services.

Strengthening the Emotional Well-Being of Rural Women

During this reporting period, we held additional group therapy and self-care sessions, primarily for older women in rural communities. These safe spaces provided opportunities to address grief, uncertainty, anxiety, and the prolonged stress that can remain long after a disaster has passed.

Beyond providing emotional support, these sessions have become meaningful spaces for connection, where participants can rebuild confidence, strengthen their support networks, and recognize the value of their knowledge and life experiences in the recovery of their communities.

Women shared stories of resilience, strategies for coping with everyday challenges, and ways to support one another, reaffirming that recovery becomes stronger when it is built collectively.

Caring for Those Who Care

We recognize that the well-being of communities also depends on the well-being of those who support them. For this reason, we held an in-person emotional wellness session for members of our organization’s team.

This space allowed team members to reflect on the challenges of supporting communities through long-term recovery after a major disaster. It also provided tools for self-care, emotional well-being, and preventing burnout associated with sustained community-based work.

Investing in the well-being of our team strengthens our organization’s ability to provide compassionate, high-quality, and sustainable support over time.

Key Progress During This Period

  • Group therapy and self-care sessions were held with rural women, primarily older women.
  • Community-based emotional support networks among women continued to be strengthened.
  • An in-person emotional support session was provided for members of our organization’s team.
  • Safe spaces for listening, trust-building, and community solidarity continued to grow.

What We Are Learning

Our experience continues to show that emotional recovery remains a critical need long after the immediate emergency has ended. It also highlights the essential role older women play as keepers of community memory, social cohesion, and resilience.

Looking Ahead

We will continue strengthening emotional well-being, leadership, and economic empowerment initiatives so that more women have the tools and support networks they need to face future challenges with greater confidence, autonomy, and security.

Thank You for Making This Possible

Your support continues to transform lives. Every space for listening, every community gathering, and every step in this healing process helps women in Acapulco recover not only their emotional well-being, but also their confidence in their ability to build a better future for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Because when a woman regains her well-being, an entire community finds new reasons to move forward.
