Sustaining hope: healing women.

“Rebuilding is not just about putting up walls, it's about restoring the inner strength that sustains a community.”

In this third stage of the project, we have deepened the psychosocial support that began after hurricanes Otis and John, strengthening both the women in rural communities and the team that supports this process in the field.

Group therapy in rural areas: shared resilience

During this period, new group self-care therapy sessions were held in rural communities, consolidating safe spaces where women continue to work on managing post-traumatic stress, grief, anxiety, and rebuilding their lives.

These sessions have made it possible to:

Strengthen collective trust and emotional support among women.

Identify emerging community leaders.

Consolidate local mutual support networks that transcend formal sessions.

Participants have expressed that these spaces not only help them heal, but also regain their voice and sense of territorial belonging. In contexts where precariousness persists, group therapy has become a concrete tool for community reconstruction.

Caring for those who care: strengthening the team

Understanding that the sustainability of the impact requires emotionally strengthened teams, a face-to-face therapy process was carried out for members of the association's team, who have been on the front line since the emergency began.

This space allowed them to:

Process the emotional exhaustion accumulated after months of crisis response.

Prevent compassion fatigue syndrome and extreme exhaustion.

Reaffirm institutional commitment through self-care and the ethics of collective care.

Investing in the well-being of the team is not an additional operating expense; it is a strategic decision to ensure quality, ethical, and sustainable interventions over time.

Key advances in this stage

Continuation of group therapy in affected rural communities.

Consolidation of community networks of emotional support among women.

Specialized in-person therapy for the organization's operational team.

Institutional strengthening to ensure sustained and responsible support.

Lessons learned

We have confirmed that post-disaster recovery is neither linear nor brief. It requires perseverance, presence, and comprehensive care. We also learned that the well-being of the team is inseparable from the well-being of the communities we support.

Conclusion

Thanks to your continued support, the project not only accompanies the emotional recovery of women, but is also building solid foundations for sustainable resilience.

The women of Acapulco are transforming pain into community leadership. And the team that accompanies them is strengthened to continue walking alongside them.

Weaving resilience, healing as a community

Young survivor of sexual violence after Hurricane

“Resilience is not imposed, it is woven into the community, with each story that dares to heal.”

During this second period, the project continued to strengthen the emotional, social, and economic support of the participating women, prioritizing those who live in rural areas with limited access to services and transportation after the hurricanes.

Aware of these conditions, we implemented a virtual and community follow-up model that allowed us to maintain constant care for 10 rural women, ensuring the continuity of their therapeutic processes and emotional recovery in safe and accessible environments.

Healing the invisible: support with dignity

Priority attention was given to a young survivor of sexual violence during Hurricane Otis, through a comprehensive therapeutic process with a human rights approach and specialized emotional support. This support has been essential for her recovery and for strengthening her local support network.

A group therapy session entitled “Caring for my body and my territory” was also held, focusing on coping with grief, anxiety, and rebuilding a sense of purpose and territorial belonging. More than 10 rural women participated, including community leaders and older adults, who found this space to be a place of trust, listening, and mutual support.

Results achieved

• 10 rural women received group therapeutic follow-up with a focus on self-care and territory.

• 1 young survivor of sexual violence began a comprehensive process of psychosocial support.

• Community network of women created to support each other in cases of anxiety and post-traumatic stress.

Challenges and lessons learned

Limited internet access continues to be a challenge; however, the team has developed hybrid support strategies that prioritize emotional closeness over technology. The women have shown admirable commitment, organizing themselves to participate in virtual or community sessions, demonstrating that solidarity can also be digital.

Next steps

The next stage will strengthen economic empowerment through gender-focused self-employment and solidarity entrepreneurship workshops. In addition, a group of community promoters will be consolidated to replicate the self-care, leadership, and resilience tools acquired.

Conclusion

Thanks to your support, this project continues to be a beacon of hope amid the reconstruction. The women of Acapulco are not only healing their wounds, but also rebuilding their collective power to transform their communities through dignity, autonomy, and sisterhood.

Because when a woman heals, an entire community flourishes.

Empowering 1,000 Women in Acapulco after the Hurricanes

Progress Report

“When all seems lost, hope blossoms in community.”

A beginning full of strength and dignity

Thanks to the valuable support of caring people like you, we took the first steps toward a profound dream: to accompany 1,000 women from the areas of Acapulco hardest hit by Hurricanes Otis and John, so that they can rebuild not only their homes, but also their dignity, their emotional health, and their ability to support their families.

This project was born out of pain, but also out of courage. The women we accompany have lost everything: their homes, their businesses, their mental health, their stability. But they have not lost the ability to get back on their feet. They just needed to know that they were not alone.

First actions: embracing life after the storm

In this initial stage, we have achieved:

• Two group self-care therapy sessions focused on post-traumatic stress management. Indigenous women, older adults, and women with disabilities participated, sharing their stories with tears... and with hope. Among them were three women with physical disabilities who faced double exclusion: that of the disaster and that of indifference.

• Three individual therapy sessions aimed at people in highly vulnerable situations:

o An indigenous woman who had been displaced and had been unable to sleep since the hurricane struck.

o A woman with a speech disability who, for the first time, found a space where she was listened to without haste.

o A woman with a motor disability who lost her job and her independence.

These sessions were not just spaces for healing: they were acts of love and humanity, where each story was received with respect and each person began to glimpse a new way of life.
