Update on activities in 2022 so far

By Olivia Petre | CEO

This year has got off to a busy start for Chipembele with our regular 31 conservation clubs running in 19 schools during term time reaching 930 children every 2 weeks, and our community meetings engaging with 64 community groups a month in our core zones. Additionally, we have already been able to run 3 trips with our bespoke Mobile Education Unit (MEU), a converted ex-British Army Land Rover ambulance, which enables our Conservation Educators to engage with very remote community groups such as women’s clubs, farming co-operatives, church groups, business associations, village elders, schools and Community Resource Boards. We form focus groups to engage them in discussions and offer practical advice on how to address issues such as sustainable livelihoods, human-wildlife conflict and natural resource management. Our educators also used this opportunity to distribute the latest issue of our Kalata for Kids magazine which is full of interesting facts, games and pictures to inspire children to learn more about nature.

In other news, we have selected 10 new participants for our year-long intensive Aspiring Conservation Leader (ACL) programme for the top school leavers from our conservation clubs to help bridge the gap from school to tertiary level courses in conservation or a conservation-related career. They have already taken part in their induction and are currently on work placements with other conservation NGOs working in the area to gain valuable hands-on experience. We have also recruited a Student Support Officer to manage and expand our student sponsorship programme and to develop a gender programme, in addition to providing career advice and mentoring our students. Our Education Centre has been inaccessible during the raining season but will soon be opening up again for 2022 to welcome more visitors and school groups for an interactive conservation experience.

Please find our 2021 annual report attached if you would like to read more about our activities last year.

The Chipembele team would like to thank all of you for making it possible for us to support the next conservation leaders in Zambia.
