Empowering Young Women Through Skills Training

By Falade O.Bunmi | Project Leader

The Empowering Young Women and Children Through Skills Training project is designed to improve the livelihoods, resilience, dignity, and socio-economic well-being of underprivileged women, adolescent girls, and vulnerable children in underserved communities. The initiative responds to the challenges faced by women and young people who have limited access to education, vocational opportunities, income-generating activities, and other pathways to economic independence.

The project provides practical, market-oriented skills training combined with mentorship, community outreach, life-skills education, and linkages to livelihood opportunities. By equipping participants with relevant skills, the initiative seeks to strengthen household income, reduce economic vulnerability, promote self-reliance, and contribute to sustainable community development.

Target Beneficiaries

The project primarily targets young women, adolescent girls, single mothers, unemployed women, school-aged vulnerable children, and children from economically disadvantaged households. Particular attention will be given to individuals who face barriers to education, employment, vocational training, or access to economic opportunities.

Women and girls will be supported to develop skills that can generate income through employment, entrepreneurship, apprenticeships, or small-scale businesses. Vulnerable children will benefit from age-appropriate life-skills activities, educational support, mentoring, and awareness programmes that promote confidence, personal development, and continued participation in education.

Key Activities

The project will conduct community mobilisation and outreach to identify vulnerable beneficiaries and encourage participation. Selected women and girls will receive practical training in areas such as tailoring and fashion design, catering and food processing, hairdressing and beauty services, digital literacy, crafts, small-business management, and other locally relevant income-generating skills.

Training will combine technical instruction with entrepreneurship, financial literacy, communication, leadership, safeguarding, and personal development. Participants will also receive mentorship and guidance on how to apply their newly acquired skills in real-life settings.

For children, the project will provide educational and life-skills activities that encourage creativity, self-confidence, problem-solving, leadership, and positive social behaviour. Community awareness sessions will also promote the importance of girls' education, child protection, gender equality, and the prevention of harmful practices.

Expected Outcomes

The project is expected to increase the number of women and girls with practical and employable skills, improve their ability to earn income, and strengthen their participation in household and community economic activities. Participants will gain greater confidence, entrepreneurial knowledge, and capacity to establish or expand small businesses.

For children, the project will contribute to improved access to learning opportunities, increased awareness of their rights and responsibilities, and stronger personal and social development. Families are expected to benefit indirectly through improved household income, reduced economic vulnerability, and greater awareness of education and child protection.

Sustainability and Community Impact

Sustainability will be promoted by building participants' skills rather than providing short-term assistance alone. Graduates will be encouraged to use their skills for self-employment, apprenticeships, employment, and peer support. Community leaders, parents, schools, trainers, and local stakeholders will be engaged to strengthen ownership and continuity.

Ultimately, the project will contribute to creating more resilient women and children who are better equipped to participate meaningfully in their communities. By investing in skills, education, confidence, and economic opportunities, the initiative seeks to break cycles of poverty and create pathways towards greater dignity, self-reliance, and sustainable development.
