The Empowering Young Women Through Skills Training project was designed to promote self-reliance, economic inclusion, and gender equality among vulnerable young women in underserved communities. Implemented over a six-month period, the initiative provided practical vocational and entrepreneurial training to 150 young women aged 18–30. The key goal was to equip participants with market-relevant skills, enhance their employability, and support them to become self-sufficient contributors to community development.
The training covered diverse skill areas including tailoring and fashion design, catering and confectionery, hairdressing and beauty care, computer literacy, and small business management. In addition to technical skills, participants received mentorship on leadership, financial literacy, and digital marketing to help them navigate business opportunities in modern economies.
The project adopted a participatory approach, engaging community leaders, local artisans, and women’s groups to ensure inclusivity and sustainability. Start-up kits were distributed to outstanding trainees to enable them to begin income-generating ventures immediately after the program.
Results from post-training evaluations showed that over 80% of participants successfully developed at least one income-generating skill, while 40% launched small-scale businesses within three months. The project also fostered peer networks that encourage collaboration and continuous learning among graduates.
Overall, the program significantly improved participants’ confidence, reduced dependency, and strengthened community resilience through women’s empowerment. The success of this initiative demonstrates that skills acquisition, coupled with mentorship and start-up support, remains a powerful tool for poverty reduction and sustainable development. Plans are underway to expand the program to neighboring communities and establish a Women’s Enterprise Hub for continuous training and resource sharing.
