SUMMARY OF THE PROGRAM- WOMEN LITERACY & EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

Women Literacy & Empowerment Program (WLEP) is a program of Virmani Trust zealously working to provide functional literacy to underprivileged illiterate adult women. We started off with this beautiful journey in 2004 with only 2 centers at Majnu Ka Tila, Delhi teaching 60 beneficiaries. There were hindrances and ups & downs and at one point we even thought of giving up. The dedication and enthusiasm of our Chairman, President, C.E.O and our Women Literacy Team did not let us fall and also the mission of the forefathers of Virmani Trust “Giving back to society” kept us motivated and unstoppable.

We feel really proud to share with you that today we have 646 centers in Delhi, Haridwar, Uttarakhand, and Haryana teaching 38,760 beneficiaries. During the last 14 years, 2,50,000 women, their families, and the community have benefited from our program. Beneficiaries are taught to read and write Hindi and Arithmetic. 

VISIT: Outlook Team visited the Women Literacy Centers of Model Town, Delhi along with the Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited and Women Literacy & Empowerment Team, Virmani Education Trust and interacted with the beneficiaries. 

RALLIES AND CAMPAIGNS

Conducting rallies are an important segment of the Women Literacy Program and are critical for the well- being of India’s population. Through rallies, the community is sensitized about health & hygiene, sanitation, online payment of electricity bills, Women Literacy Centers, and the importance of education.

Induration from October to December, 1,806 rallies have been conducted to aware of the communities. 

MEDICAL CAMPS AND EYE CAMPS

We are very much aware of the fact that private hospitals charge expensive fees for various basic tests and medication. The major reason behind the medical health camps and eye camps are to provide the destitute communities with free tests and low-cost medication. People don’t have to travel to distant places for minor checkups.

In total, 54 Medical Camps and 10 Eye Camps were set up in the destitute communities. 

SAFETY REGARDING ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

On November 13, 2019, a session was organized to aware of the Senior Coordinators, Coordinators and Center in-charges regarding the safety against the electrical appliances. 

CELEBRATIONS

Various festivals were celebrated such as Diwali, Christmas and New Year to freshen up the beneficiaries from their stressful lives.

HALF-YEARLY REPORT- APRIL 2019-SEPTEMBER 2019

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The six months report will provide comprehensive progress of the program ‘Adult Literacy’. We are delighted to present the compelling results, and how the voyage of the beneficiaries has been extremely incredible and inspiring.

Prior to enrollment in the program, beneficiaries were incapable of even holding a pencil properly. Beneficiaries were unable to perform basic day-to-day activities with ease such as signing requisite documents, helping children with studies, reading bus numbers, and exchanging money from the vendors. Most importantly, beneficiaries were ashamed of putting thumb impressions in their children's report cards and signing vital documents.

After the enrollment in the program, beneficiaries eventually learned how to read and write basic Hindi and Arithmetic. Now, they are able to perform all the activities effortlessly and with no difficulty and trouble.

MEDICAL CAMP

The basic tests conducted by the medical health camps are Blood Pressure (BP), Cold and Flu, Iron deficiency, Calcium, Fever, Bodyweight, etc.

Induration from April to September, 2,408 rallies have been conducted in all the 301 Women Literacy Centers of Tata Power-DDL.

CERTIFICATE DISTRIBUTION

Certificates were distributed at all the 301 Women Literacy Centers of Tata Power-DDL on the completion of 6 months batch.

POSHAN MAAH ABHIYAN

A special training on nutrition and healthy diet under Poshan Maah Abhiyan was being organized by Tata Power- DDL at Gulabi Bagh Auditorium on September 14, 2019.

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR PRESERVATION OF OZONE LAYER

On September 16, 2019, rallies were organized to spread awareness in the communities regarding saving the environment by planting trees, and disposing of the waste into the dustbins properly. Beneficiaries and Center in-charges also encouraged the people to not throw the waste/garbage into the gardens, the water bodies, and outside the houses, and to stop pollution via vehicles.

We are proud to see the beneficiaries actively participating in creating awareness regarding environmental issues. Education is not only restricted to books but also inculcates the importance of our environment.

AWARENESS REGARDING THE END OF PLASTIC USAGE

Beneficiaries and Center in-charges unanimously organized rallies to create awareness regarding the disadvantages of using plastic and the items made out of it. They even took an oath to end the usage of plastic in their everyday lives in order to save the environment.

CELEBRATIONS

1. MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY

Center in-charges and beneficiaries celebrated World Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, 2019, at all Women Literacy Center with overtly expressing their views about it.The purpose of the Day is to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management.

2. EID CELEBRATION

 Eid was celebrated on June 5, 2019, at all our Tata Power- DDL Women Literacy Centers with zeal and enthusiasm. Beneficiaries and Center in-charges hugged and wished each other ‘Eid Mubarak’.

3. INDEPENDENCE DAY

Independence Day was celebrated on August 15, 2019, with full enthusiasm and zeal at all our Tata Power- DDL Women Literacy Centers. Beneficiaries and Center in-charges made rangoli, hoisted the national flag of India, and sang the National Anthem in chorus.

4. TEACHER’S DAY

Every year Teacher’s Day is celebrated on September 5, to mark the importance of teachers in our lives. They show us the right path and teach us the importance of life.

Beneficiaries and Center in-charges celebrated the day by discussing the role of teachers play in an individual’s lives. They also talked about how the lives of the beneficiaries have changed while studying at the Women Literacy Centers.

5. LITERACY DAY

 International Literacy Day is celebrated on September 8 every year. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy across communities, and societies. Beneficiaries and Center in-charges wrote slogans and discussed how education has helped in changing their lives for the better. They also carried out rallies to aware of the communities regarding the importance of education.

6. HINDI DIWAS

Hindi Diwas was celebrated on September 14, at all our Tata Power- DDL 301 Women Literacy Centers (WLCs). It is celebrated to promote the official language of India, Hindi. Beneficiaries and Center in-charges came forward to celebrate the day together with love and happiness. Additionally, beneficiaries discussed how proud they are to learn to read and write Hindi at the WLCs.

7. GANDHI JAYANTI

Gandhi Jayanti is an event celebrated in India to mark the birth anniversary of Mohandas Gandhi, born on 2 October 1869. Beneficiaries and Center in-charges celebrated the day by cleanliness drives under ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ in the communities. Everyone discussed their views about Gandhism and gave the message of Love, Non- Violence, and brotherhood to the people.

IMPACT OF THE PROGRAM

Any program is unsuccessful until and unless the output is fruitful development.  

We are grateful to share with you the progress of the program.

The enrolled beneficiaries at our program did not know how to read and write basic Hindi and Arithmetic. In the duration of six months, beneficiaries have learned counting’s from 1 to 100. Besides, they are able to understand the words of Hindi.

Beneficiaries can now read and write the bus numbers, mobile numbers, names of their family members, address, and signing requisite documents.

The process of learning to read and write inculcates confidence, and empowerment in them. They are not shy to move out of their homes and can travel to distant places without any fear & hesitation.

‘Educating a woman will lead to many more advantages as compared to male counterparts. An educated woman is an asset for a country’s economic growth, decreased child and mother mortality rates, encouragement of human rights, delayed marriages, and early pregnancies, promotion of good health and the list is endless.
